ESTIMATOR

Estimate completion time

Add question counts by type (and optional intro word count). Adjust timings to match your audience.

Question counts

Defaults are benchmarks (simple online questions are often estimated ~7.5s each).

E.g., yes/no, single choice, 1–5 rating.

Benchmark for very simple questions.

E.g., “Select all that apply”.

Often slower than single-choice.

Enter total rows across all grids.

Rows are usually faster than full questions.

Short text / long text.

Usually much longer than simple questions.

Reading time (optional)

If your survey has intro/instructions, estimate reading time using words per minute.

Paste into a word counter, then enter total words.

Average silent reading rate cited ~238 WPM.

Optional overhead

Add time for page transitions, media, or complex logic.

E.g., video, loading, extra instructions.

Rounding makes estimates easier to communicate.

How this estimator works

This page combines (1) reading time from your intro word count and reading speed, and (2) answering time from question counts and per‑question benchmarks. As a simple benchmark, very simple online questions are often estimated around 7.5 seconds each.

Reading speed

A commonly cited adult silent reading average for English is about 238 words per minute, but real audiences vary.

Best practice

Use this as a planning estimate, then confirm by taking the survey yourself and watching real completion times.
